26 LC 129 0901 House Resolution 1225 By: Representatives Schofield of the 63rd, Davis of the 87th, Scott of the 76th, and Burnough of the 77th A RESOLUTION Recognizing March 2026 as Chronic Kidney Disease Awareness Month in Georgia in order1 to raise awareness of the need for research, screening programs , and access to care for2 individuals who suffer from chronic kidney disease; and for other purposes.3 WHEREAS, more than one in seven individuals in the United States, totaling approximately4 37 million Americans, are estimated to have chronic kidney dise ase (CKD), and5 approximately 90 percent of those individuals are unaware that they have CKD; and6 WHEREAS, while the two most common causes of kidney disease are hypertension and7 heart disease, the third leading cause of kidney disease is glomerulonephritis, often caused8 by rare, immune-mediated kidney diseases such as IgA nephropath y (IgAN) and9 Apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) mediated kidney disease gene; and10 WHEREAS, patients with glomerular diseases frequently advance to more costly and more11 debilitating later stages of kidney disease, including end-stage renal disease (ESRD), more12 quickly than patients with CKD in general, with estimates sugge sting that rare kidney13 diseases make up 5-to-10 percent of CKD patients but account for approximately 25 percent14 of patients receiving treatment kidney failure; and15 H. R. 1225 - 1 - 26 LC 129 0901 WHEREAS, 90 percent of patients with CKD stages 1-3 are undiagnosed, when diagnosed16 it is often diagnosed in late stages of the disease when irreversible damage to the kidneys has17 already occurred; and18 WHEREAS, it is imperative to improve diagnosis and treatment of CKD through19 community-based programs that address awareness, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic20 kidney disease.21 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that22 the members of this body recognize March 2026 as Chronic Kidney Disease Awareness23 Month in Georgia in order to raise awareness of the need for research, screening programs,24 and access to care for individuals who suffer from chronic kidney disease.25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized26 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the27 public and the press.28 H.
