HR1269: HR1269 No Lead in My Water Act; urge enactment

26 LC 65 0047 House Resolution 1269 By: Representatives Glaize of the 67 th, Barrett of the 24 th, Frye of the 122 nd, Erwin of the 32nd, Prince of the 132nd, and others A RESOLUTION Urging the Georgia Department of Education to provide informati onal support to school1 districts to encourage testing school pipes and fixtures for lead, to utilize federal funding to2 pay for such testing, and to remedy any problems found as a result of such testing; and for3 other purposes.4 WHEREAS, this resolution shall be known and may be cited as the "No Lead in My Water5 Act"; and6 WHEREAS, exposure to lead through drinking water that flows thr ough lead pipes and7 fixtures poses a serious public health risk to both children and adults; and8 WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lead exposure can9 cause permanent brain damage, reduce IQ, hinder a child's physi cal and cognitive10 development, and negatively affect attention span and academic performance; and11 WHEREAS, the federal Environmental Protection Agency, through i ts infrastructure12 program titled the Voluntary School and Child Care Lead Testing and Reduction Grant13 Program, has allocated millions of dollars to states to support lead t esting and repair in14 schools; and15 H. R. 1269 - 1 - 26 LC 65 0047 WHEREAS, this infrastructure program provides free testing for lead in school pipes and16 fixtures and covers the cost of necessary repairs and replacement of lead pipes and fixtures;17 and18 WHEREAS, the largest school district in Georgia, Gwinnett Count y Public Schools, has19 already taken advantage of this federally funded program to test for lead in school drinking20 water; and21 WHEREAS, these resources present a timely opportunity to safegu ard the health,22 development, and educational outcomes of students by identifyin g and addressing lead23 contamination in school facilities.24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that25 the members of this body urge the Georgia Department of Educati on to provide26 informational support to school districts to encourage testing school pipes and fixtures for27 lead, to utilize federal funding to pay for such testing, and to remedy any problems found as28 a result of such testing.29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized30 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the31 Georgia Department of Education and school districts in the State of Georgia.32 H.
