26 LC 129 1024 House Resolution 1295 By: Representatives Cooper of the 45th, Fleming of the 114th, Paris of the 142nd, and Martinez of the 111th A RESOLUTION Recognizing the first full week in May as Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week 2026; and1 for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, serious mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and3 schizophrenia often require treatment with antipsychotic medica tions for effective4 management, and antipsychotic prescribing rates continue to rise; and5 WHEREAS, while prolonged antipsychotic use may be essential for the treatment of certain6 conditions, it is associated with tardive dyskinesia (TD), a co ndition marked by7 uncontrollable, abnormal, and repetitive movements of the face, torso, limbs, or extremities;8 and9 WHEREAS, people at higher risk of TD include those older than 55 years, Black individuals,10 women, individuals with mood or substance use disorders, intellectual disabilities, or central11 nervous system injuries, and those with high cumulative antipsychotic exposure; and12 WHEREAS, approximately 60 percent of the estimated 800,000 adults in the United States13 living with TD remain undiagnosed; and even mild TD symptoms can be stigmatizing and14 H. R. 1295 - 1 - 26 LC 129 1024 impair physical, social, and emotional well-being, underscoring the urgency of early15 screening, detection, and intervention; and16 WHEREAS, the American Psychiatric Association recommends routin e TD screening in17 their clinical guidelines for antipsychotic treatment, and indi viduals treated with18 antipsychotics or experiencing abnormal movements should consul t their healthcare19 providers to assess TD risk, receive TD screenings, and determi ne appropriate treatment20 together; and21 WHEREAS, FDA-approved treatments for TD can provide options for symptom22 management and improved quality of life for many individuals living with TD.23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that24 the members of this body recognize the first full week in May a s Tardive Dyskinesia25 Awareness Week 2026, prioritizing TD awareness, education, and routine screenings to26 improve care for individuals prescribed antipsychotics supports the health and well-being of27 Georgia's citizens. 28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized29 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the30 public and the press.31 H.
