26 LC 129 0993 House Resolution 1294 By: Representatives Jackson of the 68th, Reese of the 140th, Mitchell of the 88th, Willis of the 55th, and Prince of the 132nd A RESOLUTION Recognizing February 19, 2026, Alpha Day at the Capitol; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity2 established for African-American men, was founded at Cornell Un iversity in Ithaca, New3 York, on December 4, 1906, by Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henr y Chapman, Eugene4 Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and5 Vertner Woodson Tandy, known as the "Jewels", who recognized the need for a strong bond6 of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country; and 7 WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., for 119 years, has been a beacon of light to8 the community by staying true to its aims of manly deeds, schol arship, and love for all9 mankind; and 10 WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has a current member ship of over 70,00011 college-educated men, inducted into over 700 college and alumni chapters in the United12 States, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean; and 13 WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., continues to live it s mission of developing14 leaders, promoting brot herhood and academic excellence while pr oviding service and15 H. R. 1294 - 1 - 26 LC 129 0993 advocacy for our communities by contributing over $2.3 million in educational scholarships16 and volunteering 850,000 community service hours; and 17 WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. counts renowned Georgians as members, such18 as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ambassador Andrew Young, M ayor Maynard H.19 Jackson, Senator Raphael Warnock, Congressman David Scott, W.E.B. Dubois, Dr. Louis20 Sullivan, Actor Omari Hardwick, John Hope, Georgia State Representatives Derrick Jackson21 and Tremaine "Teddy" Reese and Billy Mitchell, and former Repre sentative Edward22 "Mickey" Stephens; and 23 WHEREAS, the 19th Annual Alpha Day at the Capitol convenes unde r the leadership of24 Georgia District Director James Ford, II; Assistant District Di rector Khalil Jackson; and25 Political Action Committee Chairman Aaron Johnson, representing 42 chapters across the26 State.27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that28 the members of this body recognize February 19, 2026, Alpha Day at the Capitol and urge29 all citizens to recognize and applaud the contributions of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.,30 and the Georgia District in their commitment to making our communities a better place to31 reside. 32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized33 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Alpha34 Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.35 H.
