26 LC 129 0900 House Resolution 1335 By: Representatives Lupton of the 83rd, Oliver of the 84th, Holcomb of the 101st, Kendrick of the 95th, Tran of the 80th, and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending Brian Goldstone; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, DeKalb County resident Brian Goldstone is a renowned j ournalist,2 anthropologist, and author of There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America;3 and4 WHEREAS, a 2026 report from Georgia State University's Center o n Health and5 Homelessness reveals more than 4,600 people in DeKalb County are living in extended-stay6 hotels, including 2,004 households and 1,635 children; and7 WHEREAS, the report found that families living in extended-stay hotels typically pay higher8 than average monthly rent, despite living in substandard housing; and9 WHEREAS, told through the lives of five families in Atlanta, There Is No Place for Us:10 Working and Homeless in America, by Brian Goldstone, traces the rise of America’s11 “working homeless,” exposing the forces of gentrification, raci alized displacement,12 precarious low-wage labor, and a lack of tenant rights that drive a deepening crisis of housing13 insecurity; and14 H. R. 1335 - 1 - 26 LC 129 0900 WHEREAS, since its publication, There Is No Place for Us has received wide national15 recognition, including being named a finalist for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in16 Nonfiction, a New York Times Top Ten Book of 2025, The Atlantic Top Ten Book of the17 Year, an NPR Books We Love selection, and a Washington Post Notable Book of the Year,18 and was also selected by Barack Obama as one of his favorite books of the year; and19 WHEREAS, Brian Goldstone initially reported on Atlanta housing in the 2019 New Republic20 article "The New American Homeless"; and21 WHEREAS, his long-form reporting and essays on such topics as mental health in Ghana,22 life after incarceration, the plight of chronic pain sufferers during an opioid epidemic, and23 Israel's secretive campaign to deport African asylum seekers have appeared in Harper’s, The24 California Sunday Magazine, Guernica, Jacobin, and Public Books; and25 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this outstand ing Georgian be26 appropriately honored.27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that28 the members of this body recognize and commend Brian Goldstone for his unwavering29 commitment to journalism in the State of Georgia and extend their sincere best wishes for30 his continued health, happiness, and success.31 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized32 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Brian33 Goldstone.34 H.
