26 LC 129 9020 House Resolution 1340 By: Representatives Bazemore of the 69 th, Adeyina of the 110 th, Okoye of the 102 nd, and Olaleye of the 59th A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending Stephen Adébánji Akintóye; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, Professor Stephen Adébánji “Banji” Akintóye is an eminent African scholar,2 academic and author from Nigeria, and leading African historian with famous works in the3 history of the Yorubá people of southwestern Nigeria in West Africa; and4 WHEREAS, Professor Akintóye started his teaching career in African History at Obafemi5 Awolowo University, in Ile-lfe, Nigeria in 1966; and6 WHEREAS, in 1967, Professor Akintóye began teaching a course in the history of the United7 States of America to students at the university, later earning him the recognition of the8 United States government and several opportunities to speak at prestigious universities in9 America; and10 WHEREAS, by 1974, he was elevated to full professorship of African History and appointed11 the Director of the Institute of African Studies at Obafemi Awolowo University; and12 H. R. 1340 - 1 - 26 LC 129 9020 WHEREAS, Professor Akintóye has long been dedicated to constrictive international affairs,13 promoting rational solutions to the problems of disunity, instability, insecurity and poverty14 confronting the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa; and15 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that16 the members of this body recognize and commend Stephen Adébánji Akintóye and extend17 best wishes for his continued health and happiness.18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized19 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution ava ilable for distribution to20 Stephen Adébánji Akintóye.21 H.
