26 LC 129 1100 House Resolution 1369 By: Representatives Herring of the 145th, Frye of the 122nd, Rhodes of the 124th, Jones of the 25th, and Gisler of the 121st A RESOLUTION Recognizing February 17, 2026, as The Fight Against Suicide Day; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, suicide is the second leading cause of death among age s college-aged young2 adults, and growing numbers of students report persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness,3 anxiety, and emotional distress; and4 WHEREAS, The Fight Against Suicide (TFAS) is an organization committed to creating a5 sustainable training structure for the gold standard in prevention– Question, Persuade, Refer6 (QPR) Training– as well as continued access to care for student s through dependable7 community; and8 WHEREAS, The Fight Against Suicide was founded in 2021 and held its inaugural "Fight9 Week" at the University of Georgia, which has grown into their flagship campus initiative10 that includes a structured, multi-day activation that combines suicide prevention training,11 peer connection, and fundraising for direct mental-health suppo rt and culminates in a in a12 ticketed, fully sanctioned amateur boxing event that draws students into the conversation and13 funds local suicide-prevention efforts; and14 H. R. 1369 - 1 - 26 LC 129 1100 WHEREAS, The Fight Against Suicide operates in conjunction with t h e S a m A s b u r y15 Foundation, a charitable nonprofit organization established in memory of UGA student Sam16 Asbury, which directs funds raised through The Fight Against Su icide to vetted suicide17 prevention and mental health initiatives, and aligns with The Fight Against Suicide's shared18 mission of advancing awareness, prevention, and hope for college students; and19 WHEREAS, in 2025 alone, The Fight Against Suicide reached 8,000 students at five college20 campuses across the country and raised $875,000 to benefit six different mental health and21 suicide prevention partners; and22 WHEREAS, The Fight Against Suicide has expanded its suicide-prevention training across23 campuses through QPR training and through its Speaker Series pr ovided students with24 practical, real world mental-health education while strengtheni ng direct connections to25 trusted counseling resources; and26 WHEREAS, in 2026, The Fight Against Suicide plans to increase access to QPR Training27 and certification, Sunshine Funds at their campuses, provide in-house counseling resources28 to students, grow strategic partnerships and donor support, and launch Campus Chapters to29 embed suicide prevention directly into university life year-round; and30 WHEREAS, The Fight Against Suicide is leading the charge in providing college students31 durable, on-campus suicide prevention lasting far beyond the on e week a year that the32 organization is actually on each campus.33 H. R. 1369 - 2 - 26 LC 129 1100 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that34 the members of this body recognize February 17, 2026, as The Fight Against Suicide Day35 in the State of Georgia.36 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized37 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the38 public and the press.39 H.
