26 LC 129 0785 House Resolution 1385 By: Representatives Evans of the 57th and Draper of the 90th A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church on the occasion1 of its 100th anniversary; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, the seeds which were sown by the loving and humble eff orts of the devoted3 original worshipers of Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church have blossomed,4 establishing a rich tradition and history; and5 WHEREAS, Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church has been inte gral to making6 disciples of Jesus Christ in the Morningside neighborhood in Atlanta since the 1920s, when7 the road into this new community was paved and farmland gave way to development; and8 WHEREAS, the church is named for two influential Georgians: Bis hop Atticus Haygood, 9 who helped found Paine College in Augusta and was Emory's eighth president, and his sister,10 Laura Haygood, pioneer educator and missionary who was inducted into Georgia Women11 of Achievement in 2000; and12 WHEREAS, the congregation of this church has compiled an unpara lleled record of13 constructive, compassionate, and humanitarian service which it demonstrates daily through14 open minds, open hearts, and open doors; and15 H. R. 1385 - 1 - 26 LC 129 0785 WHEREAS, the members of Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church have a sincere16 desire to serve the Lord and are wholeheartedly committed to spreading the gospel of Jesus17 Christ; and18 WHEREAS, Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church has a long-standing reputation19 of service to others, currently supporting Intown Cares, Atlant a Habitat for Humanity, the20 Angel Tree for Morningside Elementary School, Wesley Woods, and Wellroot Family21 Services; and22 WHEREAS, the church's Weekday Children's Ministries operates three programs: a half-day23 preschool with an accredited kindergarten, a full-day year-round child care program, and a24 year-round after-school program - collectively caring for over 200 children and their25 families; and 26 WHEREAS, Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church’s Recreation Ministry includes27 Haygood Hoops, a youth sports initiative that served over 900 c hildren in the 2025-202628 season; and29 WHEREAS, on March 22, 2026, Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church celebrates30 its 100th anniversary with homecoming events and worship services and invites all current31 and former members, friends, and community associates to celebrate.32 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that33 the members of this body recognize the rich history of Haygood Memorial United Methodist34 Church, commend its 100 years of dedicated service to the Lord and community, and extend35 their warmest best wishes for its continued growth and success.36 H.
