26 LC 39 4959 House Resolution 1391 By: Representatives Corbett of the 174th, Ridley of the 6th, Rhodes of the 124th, Williams of the 148th, and LaHood of the 175th A RESOLUTION Honoring the life of Mrs. Edna Sirmans Sessoms and dedicating a bridge in her memory; and1 for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Mrs. Edna Sirmans Sessoms was born on October 16, 1892 , the beloved3 daughter of State Senator Frank B. Sirmans and Amanda Stricklan d Sirmans, and passed4 away on September 18, 1994; and5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Sessoms grew up on her family's land in Sirmans, Georgia, near Camp6 Creek Missionary Baptist Church; and7 WHEREAS, on February 28, 1913, she married Alexander Kelly Sess oms and the couple8 moved to Cogdell, Georgia, where they opened a large general store; and9 WHEREAS, the Sessoms went on to become the largest landowners and operators of naval10 stores in the entire State of Georgia; and11 WHEREAS, after her husband's passing in 1944, Mrs. Sessoms cont inued to oversee the12 family's timber holdings and business interests; and13 H. R. 1391 - 1 - 26 LC 39 4959 WHEREAS, Mrs. Sessoms was involved in the early pioneering of t he modern day forest14 industry in south Georgia, ensuring that the family's sprawling acreage was improved,15 contained as one functioning unit, and maintained as sustainable forests for more than five16 generations; and17 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkab le and distinguished18 Georgian be recognized appropriately by dedicating a bridge in her memory.19 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL20 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the bridge on State Route 168 over Camp Creek in Clinch21 County is dedicated as the Edna Sirmans Sessoms Bridge.22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and23 directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Edna Sirmans Sessoms24 Bridge.25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized26 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the27 family of Mrs. Edna Sirmans Sessoms and to the Department of Transportation.28 H.
