26 LC 129 1215 Senate Resolution 825 By: Senators Harbison of the 15th, Orrock of the 36th, Payne of the 54th, Goodman of the 8th, Bearden of the 30th and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band for its longstanding1 service, musical excellence, and positive impact on the Columbus community; and for other2 purposes.3 WHEREAS, The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band was founded in 1988 as a memorial4 tribute to Robert M. Barr, beloved director of the Jordan High School Band in Columbus,5 Georgia, from 1946 to 1962; and6 WHEREAS, under the leadership of Robert M. Barr, the Jordan High School Band achieved7 the highest acclaim, earning numerous state and national titles and establishing a standard8 of musical excellence that brought pride and distinction to the Columbus community; and9 WHEREAS, as a teacher, mentor, and friend, Mr. Barr positively influenced the lives of10 hundreds of young people and was recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in11 the Chattahoochee Valley in the 20th century prior to his passing in May 1988; and12 WHEREAS, since its founding, The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band has grown into a13 concert band comprised of more than sixty dedicated volunteer m usicians ranging in age14 from 15 to 94; and15 S. R. 825 - 1 - 26 LC 129 1215 WHEREAS, for 37 years, the band has enriched the cultural life of the community by16 performing for thousands of citizens, including appearances dur ing the 1996 Summer17 Olympic events held in Columbus, Georgia, annual July 4th celeb rations at the Heard18 Theatre, and numerous performances supporting charitable effort s such as fundraising19 initiatives for the Easter Seals Organization; and20 WHEREAS, The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band has maintained a distinguished21 tradition of musical leadership, with Dr. George Corradino serving as its first conductor from22 1988 until 2011, followed by Fred Catchings from 2011 until 2023, and currently under the23 baton of Dr. Oliver C. Boone; and24 WHEREAS, The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band stands as a testament to the enduring25 legacy of Robert M. Barr and to the power of volunteerism, arti stic excellence, and26 community engagement in the State of Georgia.27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body28 recognize and commend The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band for its 37 years of29 dedicated service and outstanding musical contributions to Columbus and the Chattahoochee30 Valley.31 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed32 to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to The Robert "Bob"33 Barr Community Band.34 S.
