SR834: SR834 Bangladeshi Peacekeepers in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations; recognize

26 LC 129 0943 Senate Resolution 834 By: Senators Rahman of the 5th, Harbison of the 15th, Still of the 48th, Brass of the 6th, Rhett of the 33rd and others ADOPTED SENATE A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending the outstanding contributions and sacrifices of Bangladeshi1 peacekeepers in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, the United States recognized Bangladesh as an independent nation on April 4,3 1972, marking 54 years of diplomatic relations and strengthenin g people to people4 connection between the two countries; and5 WHEREAS, tens of thousands of Bangladeshi Americans, including former members of the6 Bangladesh Army who served with distinction in United Nations P eacekeeping Missions,7 reside in the State of Georgia and are contributing to every sector of Georgia's economy; and8 WHEREAS, Bangladesh has been a leading contributor to United Na tions Peacekeeping9 Operations since 1988, beginning with deployment of military observers during the Iran-Iraq10 war; and11 WHEREAS, Bangladesh has participated in 63 United Nations Peace keeping Missions12 across 43 countries, deploying more than 200,000 uniformed personnel, predominantly from13 the Bangladesh Army; and14 S. R. 834 - 1 - 26 LC 129 0943 WHEREAS, approximately 6,000 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are currently serving in eight15 ongoing missions around the world; and16 WHEREAS, at least 174 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have lost their lives and more than 28017 have been injured in the line of duty, demonstrating extraordin ary courage, sacrifice, and18 commitment to global peace and security; and19 WHEREAS, Bangladeshi peacekeepers play a vital role not only in maintaining security but20 also in protecting civilians, providing humanitarian assistance , supporting infrastructure21 development, strengthening local security forces, and advancing post-conflict recovery; and22 WHEREAS, the professionalism, discipline, and humanitarian valu es demonstrated by23 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have earned international recognition and enhanced Bangladesh's24 standing within the global community.25 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body26 recognize and commend the People of Bangladesh, and especially the Bangladesh Army, for27 their significant and sustained contributions to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations.28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body expresses its profound respect and gratitude29 to Bangladeshi peacekeepers who have served with honor, pays tribute to those who made30 the ultimate sacrifice, and conveys its solidarity and deepest compassion to their families,31 including those residing in the State of Georgia.32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed33 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the34 press.35 S.
