26 LC 112 3730 Senate Resolution 847 By: Senators Jones II of the 22nd, Anavitarte of the 31st, Walker III of the 20th, Parent of the 44th, Robertson of the 29th and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending the 1980 and 2026 United States Olym pic Men's Hockey1 Teams for their historic achievements and contributions to nati onal unity; and for other2 purposes.3 WHEREAS, forty-six years ago, in a time of significant global a nd domestic challenge, a4 group of amateur collegiate players representing the United States faced impossible odds to5 defeat the dominant Soviet Union team in Lake Placid, New York, an event forever6 enshrined in our national memory as the "Miracle on Ice"; and7 WHEREAS, that 1980 victory served as a catalyst for hope, bringing a weary nation together8 as citizens from all walks of life rooted for "our boys" to bring home the gold, proving that9 American resilience can overcome any obstacle; and10 WHEREAS, today, in the year 2026, history has repeated itself in spectacular fashion as the11 United States Men's Hockey Team has once again captured the Oly mpic gold medal in12 Milano-Cortina, Italy, defeating Canada in a thrilling overtime victory on February 22,13 2026—the exact anniversary of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice"; and14 S. R. 847 - 1 - 26 LC 112 3730 WHEREAS, just as it did 46 years ago, this triumph has provided a profound moment of15 unity for a divided nation, reminding all Americans that when we face adversity, we do not16 falter, but we instead roll up our sleeves and get to work to improve our country and achieve17 greatness; and18 WHEREAS, the 2026 team, led by heroes such as Jack Hughes, who scored the19 game-winning goal, and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who made 41 saves, displayed the20 same grit, unselfishness, that has defined the American spirit for generations; and21 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordi nary accomplishments of22 these two legendary teams be recognized by this body as symbols of what is possible when23 a nation stands together in pursuit of a common goal.24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body25 recognize and commend the 1980 and 2026 United States Olympic Men's Hockey Teams for26 their historic gold medal victories and for their roles in unit ing the citizens of the United27 States.28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed29 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the representatives30 of USA Hockey and the members of the honored teams.31 S.
