26 LC 129 9039 House Resolution 1445 By: Representatives Cox of the 28th, Burns of the 159th, Hatchett of the 155th, Tarvin of the 2nd, Greene of the 154th, and others A RESOLUTION Urging the continued historical preservation of the Georgia state capitol; commending the1 Georgia Building Authority team for excellence with the restora tion and the discovery of2 Andrew Carnegie Steel–one of the two oldest operating capitols in the United States with3 Carnegie Steel; and for other purposes. 4 WHEREAS, the Georgia State Capitol stands as a magnificent testament to our state's rich5 history and democratic traditions, having served continuously a s the seat of Georgia's6 government since its completion in 1889; and7 WHEREAS, this historic structure was constructed between 1884 and 1889, representing one8 of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in the sout heastern United States and9 serving as a symbol of Georgia's enduring commitment to democratic governance; and10 WHEREAS, during the recent comprehensive renovation of our beloved Capitol, remarkable11 discoveries were made that revealed the building's extraordinar y historical significance,12 including the presence of original Andrew Carnegie structural steel throughout the building's13 framework; and14 H. R. 1445 - 1 - 26 LC 129 9039 WHEREAS, this discovery establishes the Georgia State Capitol a s one of the two oldest15 capitol buildings still in continuous operation in the United S tates of America to feature16 Carnegie steel construction, adding immeasurable historical value to this treasured landmark;17 and18 WHEREAS, the Georgia Building Authority, under exceptional lead ership, undertook the19 monumental task of restoring our State Capitol to its original architectural glory while20 preserving its historical integrity for future generations; and21 WHEREAS, Marty Smith and Gerald Pilgrim of the Georgia Building Authority22 demonstrated outstanding leadership, vision, and dedication thr oughout this complex23 restoration project, ensuring that every detail honored both th e building's historical24 significance and the needs of modern governance; and25 WHEREAS, David Goodhead provided exceptional expertise and craf tsmanship in the26 renovation process; his meticulous attention to detail and deep respect for historical27 preservation brought our Capitol back to its magnificent original condition; and28 WHEREAS, the dedication and expertise of the construction team comprised of Sachin Dev29 Shailendra of SG Contracting, Michael Macon of Balfour-Beatty, M. Sean Moxley of30 Garbutt Construction, and the design team including Lamar Wakefield and Henry Cantwell31 of Nelson were essential to the successful restoration of one o f Georgia's most important32 historic landmarks; and33 H. R. 1445 - 2 - 26 LC 129 9039 WHEREAS, the entire Georgia Building Authority team worked tire lessly to balance34 historical preservation with modern functionality, creating a restored Capitol that serves as35 both a working seat of government and a treasured historical landmark; and36 WHEREAS, their collective efforts have ensured that the Georgia State Capitol will continue37 to inspire citizens and visitors alike for generations to come, standing as a proud symbol of38 Georgia's heritage and democratic values.39 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that40 the members of this body urge the continued historical preserva tion of the Georgia State41 Capitol and commend the Georgia Building Authority team for exc ellence with the42 restoration and the discovery of Andrew Carnegie Steel–one of t he two oldest operating43 capitols in the United States with Carnegie Steel.44 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives extend s its deepest45 gratitude to all members of t he Georgia Building Authority team who contributed to this46 historic restoration project, recognizing their commitment to p reserving Georgia's47 architectural heritage.48 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized49 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to Gerald50 Pilgrim, David Goodhead, and the Georgia Building Authority.51 H.
