A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life of Mrs. Victoria Travis Jackson and dedicating a road in her memory; and1
for other purposes.2
WHEREAS, Mrs. Victoria Travis Jackson devoted her life to fighting for equity and working3
alongside some of the most prominent figures in American politi cal and social justice4
movements; and 5
WHEREAS, born in 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Jackson was edu cated at the historic6
David T. Howard High School, and at the age of 79, she enrolled at the Atlanta Metropolitan7
State College to demonstrate that the pursuit of knowledge has no expiration date; and 8
WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson was a central figure in the movement to t ear down the "Peyton9
Wall," a concrete symbol of racial segregation in Atlanta; and 10
WHEREAS, she transformed the City of Atlanta's education landscape and opportunities by11
demanding and securing better textbooks and facilities for underserved communities; and12
WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson collaborated with numerous civil rights i cons and leaders,13
including Mayor Maynard Jackson and Congressman John Lewis; and14

WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson's life work serves as an enduring inspiration for current and future15
generations to continue the vital task of creating a more just and equitable society and it is16
abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkable and distingu ished Georgian be17
appropriately recognized by dedicating a road in her memory.18
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL19
ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the portion of State Route 139 from St ate Route 280 to20
Fairburn Road in Fulton County is dedicated as the Victoria Tra vis Jackson Memorial21
Highway.22
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and23
directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Victoria Travis Jackson24
Memorial Highway.25
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized26
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the27
family of Mrs. Victoria Travis Jackson and to the Department of Transportation.28
