26 LC 112 3801 House Resolution 1535 By: Representatives Adeyina of the 110th and Okoye of the 102nd A RESOLUTION Honoring the life and memory of Dr. Ego Okafor; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, Dr. Ego Okafor was a distinguished science educator in the DeKalb County2 School District who dedicated more than 25 years of exemplary service to the students and3 families of Georgia; and4 WHEREAS, throughout her remarkable career, Dr. Okafor was widel y respected for her5 unwavering commitment to academic excellence, educational equit y, and community6 empowerment, fostering engaging, inquiry-based classrooms where students felt valued,7 challenged, and inspired to reach their fullest potential; and8 WHEREAS, she was a steadfast advocate for underserved students, working tirelessly to9 ensure equitable access to educational resources and opportunit ies as well as leaving an10 enduring mark on the countless young minds she taught and mentored; and11 WHEREAS, Dr. Okafor's academic achievements reflected her deep commitment to12 education, earning an education specialist degree in science ed ucation from Georgia State13 University in 2005, a Master of Education in science education from Georgia State14 H. R. 1535 - 1 - 26 LC 112 3801 University in 1999, and a Bachelor of Science with honors in zoology from the University15 of Nigeria in 1978; and16 WHEREAS, her excellence in teaching was recognized with numerou s honors, including17 Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2002 and 2004, Georgia Earth Science Teacher18 of the Year in 2004, Henderson Middle School Teacher of the Year on multiple occasions,19 and the prestigious People to People Eisenhower Distinguished Educator Award; and20 WHEREAS, beyond the classroom, Dr. Okafor was a tireless servan t of her community21 whose civic engagement reflected her deep belief in democracy and collective responsibility,22 dedicating countless hours to educating residents about the importance of civic participation23 and ensuring that every voice had the opportunity to be heard; and24 WHEREAS, she demonstrated extraordinary compassion and leadership by assisting elderly25 citizens with voter registration, patiently guiding them through the process, and on election26 days personally organizing transportation and driving more than 100 seniors to polling27 places, removing barriers and empowering them to exercise their fundamental right to vote;28 and29 WHEREAS, Dr. Okafor's legacy extended beyond her professional a nd civic30 accomplishments, as she was a devoted wife of 41 years, a lovin g mother of two, and a31 source of strength, wisdom, and inspiration to her family, instilling in them enduring values32 of integrity, perseverance, service, and faith; and33 WHEREAS, though she passed away a few months ago, her profound influence continues34 to live on through the students she inspired, the colleagues she mentored, the community she35 uplifted, and the family she cherished; and36 H. R. 1535 - 2 - 26 LC 112 3801 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this body honor the life and legacy of this37 extraordinary educator, public servant, and community leader whose contributions have left38 an indelible mark on the State of Georgia.39 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that40 the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory o f Dr. Ego Okafor and41 express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing.42 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized43 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the44 family of Dr. Ego Okafor.45 H.
