26 LC 62 0094 House Resolution 1530 By: Representatives Romman of the 97 th, Williams of the 168 th, Hugley of the 141 st, Holcomb of the 101st, Westbrook of the 163rd, and others A RESOLUTION Proposing an amendment to the Constitution so as to repeal the exception allowing1 involuntary servitude for persons convicted of crimes or contempt of court; to provide for a2 short title; to provide for the submission of this amendment for ratification or rejection; and3 for other purposes.4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:5 SECTION 1.6 This resolution shall be known and may be cited as the "Ending Slavery in Georgia7 Amendment."8 SECTION 2.9 Article I, Section I of the Constitution is amended by revising Paragraph XXII as follows:10 "Paragraph XXII. Involuntary servitude. There shall be no involuntary servitude within11 the State of Georgia except as a punishment for crime after legal conviction thereof or for12 contempt of court."13 H. R. 1530 - 1 - 26 LC 62 0094 SECTION 3.14 The above proposed amendment to the Constitution shall be publi shed and submitted as15 provided in Article X, Section I, Paragraph II of the Constitution. The ballot submitting the16 above proposed amendment shall have written or printed thereon the following:17 "( ) YES18 ( ) NO19 20 Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to remove la nguage authorizing the use of involuntary servitude as a punishment for crimes or for contempt of court?" All persons desiring to vote in favor of ratifying the proposed amendment shall vote "Yes."21 All persons desiring to vote against ratifying the proposed amendment shall vote "No." If22 such amendment shall be ratified as provided in said Paragraph of the Constitution, it shall23 become part of the Constitution of this state.24 H.
