A RESOLUTION
Honoring Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones for her historic leaders hip and lasting1
contributions to the State of Georgia; and for other purposes.2
WHEREAS, the month of March is designated as Women's History Mo nth, a time to3
celebrate the achievements and contributions of women who have broken barriers and paved4
the way for future generations; and5
WHEREAS, Jan Slaughter Jones, born in Warner Robins, Georgia, and a proud graduate of6
the University of Georgia and Georgia State University, has dedicated her career to public7
service, bringing with her the values of her upbringing as the granddaughter of farmers and8
the daughter of a career soldier; and9
WHEREAS, first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2002, Representative10
Jones has served the citizens of House District 47 with distinction, fiercely advocating for11
education reform, fiscal responsibility, and policies that brin g government closer to the12
people; and13
WHEREAS, in January 2010, Representative Jones shattered the ma rble ceiling of the14
Georgia State Capitol by being elected Speaker Pro Tempore, becoming the first woman to15

serve in that role and the highest-ranking woman in Georgia legislative history at the time;16
and17
WHEREAS, following the passing of Speaker David Ralston in November 2022, Jan Jones18
made Her-Story once again when she was elevated to become the f irst woman to serve as19
Acting Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, leading the chamber with steady20
resolve during a period of transition until January 2023; and21
WHEREAS, throughout her tenure, Speaker Pro Tempore Jones has d emonstrated22
unwavering leadership, navigating complex legislative battles ranging from education reform23
and election integrity to economic development, all while mentoring the next generation of24
leaders; and25
WHEREAS, her legacy as a trailblazer, a devoted public servant, and a role model for26
women and girls across Georgia serves as an enduring inspiration.27
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that28
the members of this body commend Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones for her historic tenure29
as Acting Speaker and her continuous service as Speaker Pro Tempore, celebrating her as a30
pioneer who has expanded the role of women in Georgia's leadership.31
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, during this year's Women's History Month, the32
members of this body honor her dedication to the constituents o f District 47, her33
family—including her husband, Kalin, as well as their four chil dren and four34
grandchildren—and her profound impact on the State of Georgia.35

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized36
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution ava ilable for distribution to37
Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones.38
