26 LC 129 1327 House Resolution 1594 By: Representatives Cannon of the 58th, Berry of the 56th, McClain of the 109th, and Holly of the 116th A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending Dr. Daniel Black; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, Dr. Daniel Black is a nationally renowned and award-winning novelist, scholar,2 and community leader; and3 WHEREAS, Dr. Black, who lives in Atlanta, is a professor of African American studies and4 English at his alma mater Clark Atlanta University as well as at Morehouse College, where5 he has mentored writers and scholars since 1993; and6 WHEREAS, a prolific writer, his literary works include They Tell Me of a Home, The Sacred7 Place, Perfect Peace, Twelve Gates to the City, The Coming, and Listen to the Lambs, among8 many others; and9 WHEREAS, Dr. Black has been nominated for the Townsend Literary Prize, the Ernest J.10 Gaines Award, the Ferro-Grumley Literary Prize, the Lambda Lite rary Award, and the11 Georgia Author of the Year Prize; in addition, he was awarded the Writer's Award from the12 Middle-Atlantic Writers Association; and13 H. R. 1594 - 1 - 26 LC 129 1327 WHEREAS, his novel, Perfect Peace, was chosen as the 2014 selection for "If All Arkansas14 Read the Same Book" by the Arkansas Center for the Book at the Arkansas State Library as15 well as earned him Author of the Year in 2011 from the Go on Girl! Book Club; and16 WHEREAS, he is the founder of the Ndugu and Nzinga Rites of Passage Nation, a mentoring17 society that teaches character and the principles to African-American youth; and18 WHEREAS, in May 2024, Dr. Daniel Black delivered a viral commencement speech address19 for Clark Atlanta University, where he shared an encouraging me ssage to graduates that20 assured them that their accomplishments made them part of a legacy; and21 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the remarkable accomplishments of this22 extraordinary gentleman be appropriately honored.23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that24 the members of this body recognize and commend Dr. Daniel Black for his outstanding25 impact on the State of Georgia and extend their sincere best wishes for his continued health,26 happiness, and success.27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized28 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Dr.29 Daniel Black.30 H.
