26 LC 112 3851 House Resolution 1632 By: Representatives Frye of the 122nd, Gisler of the 121st, Hugley of the 141st, Holly of the 116th, Smith of the 41st, and others A RESOLUTION Commending the Clarke County School District for preserving the historic and significant1 West Broad Street School Campus; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, the West Broad Street School Campus in Athens, Georgia, established in 1891,3 has been a historic cornerstone of African American education, including the historic Minor4 Street Building, constructed in 1938, and the historic Campbell Lane Building, constructed5 in 1958; and6 WHEREAS, these buildings represent distinct and significant per iods in Georgia's7 educational history: the Minor Street Building as a Jim Crow-era school and the Campbell8 Lane Building as an Equalization-era facility, both embodying the architectural, cultural, and9 educational heritage of their eras; and10 WHEREAS, after years of vacancy, deterioration, and threats to their integrity, the Clarke11 County School District has undertaken careful planning and rehabilitation efforts to preserve12 and restore both these critical historic and significant buildings, ensuring their continued use13 for educational and community purposes; and14 H. R. 1632 - 1 - 26 LC 112 3851 WHEREAS, the district's efforts include adaptive reuse for classrooms, career pathway labs,15 heritage and community spaces, and outdoor areas that honor the campus's historic16 significance while serving contemporary educational needs; and17 WHEREAS, these preservation efforts have been conducted in clos e collaboration with18 Historic Athens, local stakeholders, and community members, demonstrating a commitment19 to protecting the campus's historical, cultural, and educational significance.20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that21 the members of this body commend the Clarke County School District for its leadership in22 preserving and restoring both the Minor Street and Campbell Lane Buildings, ensuring these23 two historic and significant structures remain integral to the Athens community for present24 and future generations.25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized26 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the27 Clarke County School District.28 H.
