House Resolution 1664

A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life of Mr. General Wallace and dedicating an intersection in his memory; and1
for other purposes.2
WHEREAS, the Wallace family's connection to Dawson County, Geor gia, began in the3
1880's when Ertus and Octavia Wallace established their home near present-day State Route4
400 and State Route 136; and5
WHEREAS, the Wallace family operated a number of important loca l businesses on the6
property, including a steam engine-powered sawmill that supplied lumber to the surrounding7
region, as well as a corn mill, general store, and gasoline pump; and8
WHEREAS, the Wallace family operated a general store from their homestead, providing9
essential goods and services to area residents until the constr uction of their stand-alone10
building in the 1920's which became the centerpiece of a thriving community hub that served11
generations of residents until the store's closure in the 1950's; and12
WHEREAS, the Wallace family property was home to four dwelling structures and also13
served the civic life of the surrounding community, functioning as a voting precinct and14
polling location until the early 1960's; and15

WHEREAS, in the mid-1970's, the Wallace family sold the property to the State of Georgia16
to allow for the construction of State Route 400, contributing to the transportation17
infrastructure that now serves thousands of Georgians each day; and18
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkab le Georgia family be19
recognized appropriately by dedicating an intersection in memory of Mr. General Wallace.20
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL21
ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the intersection of State Route 400 and State Route 136 in22
Dawson County is dedicated as the General Wallace Intersection.23
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and24
directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the General Wallace Intersection.25
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized26
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the27
family of Mr. General Wallace and to the Department of Transportation.28
