26 LC 112 3891 House Resolution 1689 By: Representatives Williams of the 168th and DeLoach of the 167th A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending Mrs. Nancy "Nan" McClellan Flowers; and for other1 purposes.2 WHEREAS, Mrs. Nancy "Nan" McClellan Flowers has been a beloved resident of Hinesville3 and Liberty County for more than 60 years, dedicating her life and career to teaching,4 counseling, and service to this community; and5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Flowers first came to Hinesville in 1963 with her husband, the late J.6 Sidney Flowers, Liberty County native and long-time state court solicitor, and their two7 young daughters, beginning her teaching career at the Bradwell Institute; and8 WHEREAS, in 1966, Mrs. Flowers made history by volunteering to become the first white9 teacher to integrate the faculty of Liberty County High School, courageously bridging10 divides and investing her heart in the success of her students while sponsoring the school11 newspaper, yearbook, and drama program; and12 WHEREAS, following the consolidation of Liberty County High School and the Bradwell13 Institute, Mrs. Flowers returned to the Bradwell Institute with the perspective, compassion,14 H. R. 1689 - 1 - 26 LC 112 3891 and diplomacy needed to unite students from both schools, teaching English with distinction15 and encouragement; and16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Flowers advanced her education, earning a masters degree, and went on17 to serve as a high school guidance counselor, a licensed professional counselor in the State18 of Georgia, an elementary school counselor at Fort Stewart, and later a college professor, all19 while encouraging and guiding generations of young people; and20 WHEREAS, Mrs. Flowers' lifelong contributions to the community were recognized in 201121 when the Liberty County Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Association presented her with22 the Trail Blazer Award for her outstanding service to the citizens of Liberty County; and23 WHEREAS, beyond her professional career, Mrs. Flowers has remained a faithful and active24 volunteer in many organizations, including First Presbyterian a nd Allenhurst Presbyterian25 churches, CASA, Taylors Creek Cemetery Association, retired teacher associations, and local26 festivals and historical celebrations; and27 WHEREAS, Mrs. Flowers' legacy of mentorship, compassion, and leadership has touched28 countless lives, with former students and community members continuing to express their29 gratitude for the lasting difference she has made.30 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that31 the members of this body recognize and commend Mrs. Nancy "Nan" McClellan Flowers for32 her many outstanding contributions on behalf of her fellow citizens and extend best wishes33 for future health and happiness.34 H. R. 1689 - 2 - 26 LC 112 3891 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized35 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Mrs.36 Nancy "Nan" McClellan Flowers.37 H.
