26 LC 39 5074 House Resolution 1709 By: Representatives Gilliard of the 162 nd, Stephens of the 164 th, Jackson of the 165 th, and Petrea of the 166th A RESOLUTION Recognizing Ms. Mary Davis and dedicating an intersection in he r honor; and for other1 purposes.2 WHEREAS, Ms. Mary Davis has long been recognized for her musical talents and unique3 sound; and4 WHEREAS, a native of Savannah, Georgia, Ms. Davis is best known as the original lead5 vocalist and front woman of the iconic funk and rhythm and blues group, the S.O.S. Band;6 and7 WHEREAS, her smooth and powerful voice helped lead the band to multi-platinum success,8 selling millions of records world wide; and9 WHEREAS, Ms. Davis's voice and direction was a driving force be hind the band's hits,10 "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," "Just Be Good To Me," "Tell Me If You Still Care,"11 "The Finest," and "No One's Gonna Love You"; and12 H. R. 1709 - 1 - 26 LC 39 5074 WHEREAS, one of the most sampled and referenced groups in modern soul and hip-hop, the13 S.O.S. Band's influence extends beyond the 1970s and 1980s to future generations of music14 lovers; and 15 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkab le and distinguished16 Georgian be recognized appropriately by dedicating an intersection in her honor.17 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL18 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the intersection of State Route 204 an d Tibet Avenue in19 Chatham County is dedicated as the Mary Davis "S.O.S. Band" Intersection.20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and21 directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Mary Davis "S.O.S. Band"22 Intersection.23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized24 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to Ms.25 Mary Davis and to the Department of Transportation.26 H.
