26 LC 112 3740 Senate Resolution 970 By: Senators Halpern of the 39th, Hatchett of the 50th, McLaurin of the 14th, Jones II of the 22nd, Mangham of the 55th and others A RESOLUTION Honoring and commending Justice Verda M. Colvin for her histori c achievements,1 leadership, and distinguished service in the legal profession; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Justice Verda M. Colvin was born and raised in Atlanta , Georgia, and is a3 graduate of Daniel McLaughlin Therrell High School; and4 WHEREAS, Justice Colvin earned her bachelor's degree in governm ent and religion from5 Sweet Briar College in Virginia and her Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School6 of Law, reflecting a strong foundation in public service and the law; and7 WHEREAS, Justice Colvin's legal career reflects a deep dedication to justice, having served8 as an Assistant Solicitor in Athens-Clarke County, Assistant Ge neral Counsel at Clark9 Atlanta University, Assistant District Attorney in Clayton Coun ty, and Assistant United10 States Attorney in the Middle District of Georgia; and11 WHEREAS, Justice Colvin also served nearly six years as a Super ior Court Judge in the12 Macon Judicial Circuit, during which time she demonstrated lead ership in judicial13 accountability and reform through service on the Council of Accountability Court Judges and14 the Council of Superior Court Judges; and15 S. R. 970 - 1 - 26 LC 112 3740 WHEREAS, in April 2020, Justice Colvin was appointed to the Georgia Court of Appeals,16 further solidifying her record of excellence and commitment to justice; and17 WHEREAS, on July 20, 2021, she was appointed to the Supreme Cou rt of Georgia by18 Governor Brian Kemp, becoming the first African American woman appointed by a19 republican governor to the state's highest court, marking a his toric milestone in Georgia's20 judicial history; and21 WHEREAS, Justice Colvin's leadership extends beyond the bench t hrough her service on22 numerous professional, educational, and nonprofit boards, reflecting a sustained commitment23 to civic engagement and community impact; and24 WHEREAS, Justice Colvin's legacy reflects integrity, leadership , and dedication to25 advancing fairness, equity, and public trust within Georgia's judicial system.26 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body27 honor and commend Justice Verda M. Colvin for her historic achievements, leadership, and28 distinguished service in the legal profession.29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed30 to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Justice Verda M.31 Colvin.32 S.
