A RESOLUTION
Honoring the veterans of World War I and dedicating a bridge in their memory; and for other1
purposes.2
WHEREAS, our nation's security continues to rely on patriotic m en and women who put3
their personal lives on hold in order to place themselves in harm's way to protect the freedom4
that all United States citizens cherish; and5
WHEREAS, United States military veterans of World War I demonstrated a deep personal6
commitment to protecting democracy and a willingness to sacrifice their own personal safety7
and comfort to ensure the well-being of their fellow man; and8
WHEREAS, the state of Georgia played a significant role during America's participation in9
World War I, contributing more than 100,000 men and women to the war effort and holding10
more training camps than any other state; and11
WHEREAS, on Armistice Day, November 11, 1921, more than 1,000 T homas County12
citizens and veterans gathered around the newly constructed bridge over Ochlockonee River13
on State Route 3 ALT for a dedication program to name the bridge "Memorial Bridge" but14
the bridge dedication was not preserved when the bridge was rebuilt in 1941; and15

WHEREAS, it is important that World War I veterans are thanked for their selfless service16
to this nation and honored for their commitment to protecting t he people and ideals of the17
United States; and18
WHEREAS, World War I veterans embodied the spirit of service, f inding meaning in19
something greater than themselv es, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that the20
outstanding accomplishments and sacrifices of these remarkable and distinguished21
Americans be honored appropriately.22
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL23
ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the bridge on State Route 3 ALT over t he Ochlockonee24
River in Thomas County is dedicated as the World War I Veterans Memorial Bridge.25
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and26
directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the World War I Veterans27
Memorial Bridge.28
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized29
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the 30
board of commissioners of Thomas County and to the Department of Transportation.31
