26 LC 39 5095 Senate Resolution 1002 By: Senators McNeel of the 18th and Williams of the 25th A RESOLUTION Honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Neva Jane Langley Fickling and dedicating a road in1 her memory; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Mrs. Neva Jane Langley Fickling has long been recogniz ed for her musical3 talent and grace; and4 WHEREAS, raised in Lakeland, Florida, Mrs. Fickling began playing the piano at the age5 of seven and studied music at Florida Southern College and Wesleyan College; and6 WHEREAS, at the age of 19 she won the Miss Macon pageant and we nt on to win Miss7 Georgia and Miss America in 1953, holding the prestigious honor of being the only woman8 to win all three titles; and9 WHEREAS, after completing her studies at Wesleyan College in 19 55, Mrs. Fickling10 continued sharing her talents on the piano at public performances, including events with the11 Macon-Wesleyan Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra; and12 WHEREAS, she devoted her time and talents to the boards of nume rous organizations,13 including Wesleyan College, Georgia Women of Achievement, the G eorgia Trust for14 S. R. 1002 - 1 - 26 LC 39 5095 Historic Preservation, the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition, Kee p America Beautiful15 Commission, Georgia State Clean Community Commission, the State Botanical Garden of16 Georgia, the Macon Symphony Orchestra, the Community Foundation of Central Georgia,17 the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Georgia Council for the Arts; and18 WHEREAS, Mrs. Fickling played a vital role in saving the Grand Opera House in Macon19 from demolition through her fundraising and public awareness efforts; and 20 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkab le and distinguished21 Georgian be appropriately recognized by dedicating a road in her memory.22 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL23 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the portion of State Route 87 from Elbert Jackson Road to24 Marvin Circle in Monroe County is dedicated as the Neva Langley Fickling Memorial25 Highway.26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and27 directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Neva Langley Fickling28 Memorial Highway.29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed30 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the family of Mrs.31 Neva Jane Langley Fickling and to the Department of Transportation.32 S.
