26 LC 129 1489 Senate Resolution 1042 By: Senator Mallow of the 2nd A RESOLUTION Recognizing the 23rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration by the Daughters of Mary Magdalene1 and commending Pamela Howard Oglesby-Fox; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and3 emphasizes cultural pride through events inspired by recollecti ons of our ancestors' and4 grandparents' struggles against slavery and segregation, and their fight for freedom, dignity,5 justice, and equality for generations to come; and 6 WHEREAS, the Daughters of Mary Magdalene is a nonprofit community organization that7 serves areas lacking economic, social, and cultural resources b y offering educational8 materials, mentoring, and oral history griots to motivate and help uplift people to reach their9 full potential; and 10 WHEREAS, the theme for this year's Juneteenth celebration is, "Rebuild, Reconstruct and11 Re-Educate!"; and 12 WHEREAS, one of the highlights of the Juneteenth celebration is the Honorees Program,13 which recognizes ordinary people who exemplify extraordinary character and dedicate their14 S. R. 1042 - 1 - 26 LC 129 1489 life's work to helping an benef itting children, young adults, a nd others throughout the15 community; and 16 WHEREAS, Pamela Howard Oglesby-Fox is being recognized as a 202 6 Juneteenth17 Celebration Honoree; and18 WHEREAS, a native of Savannah, Pamela is a 1971 graduate of Woodville-Tompkins High19 School and Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science, where she graduated with honors in20 1976 from the Diploma Program and later earned an Associate of Science degree in Funeral21 Services in 1987; and22 WHEREAS, Pamela Howard Oglesby-Fox made history as the first woman to operate as a23 licensed Embalmer in Savannah-Chatham County where she is also a licensed Funeral24 Director, making her a trailblazer in her field; and 25 WHEREAS, beyond her professional accomplishments, Pamela is wid ely recognized as a26 dedicated community activist and advocate. She is the co-author of Savannah's Black "First27 Ladies", a work that chronicles the stories of African-American women who achieved28 historic "firsts" in Savannah and helped shape the city's progress; and29 WHEREAS, Pamela has served on numerous boards and committees th roughout the30 community. She currently serves on the ADA Appeals Board for Chatham Area Transit. She31 is also a Founding Member of the Ivory Bay Community Development Corporation and The32 Weeping Time Commemoration Committee; and33 S. R. 1042 - 2 - 26 LC 129 1489 WHEREAS, Pamela is married to Mr. Aaron R. Fox, and of all her accomplishments, Pamela34 considers her greatest blessings to be her family: her daughter Taiyanika, her grandson35 Terrence, and her four great-grandchildren; and36 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper to recognize the D aughters of Mary37 Magdalene for presenting the longest-serving Juneteenth celebration in Savannah, of more38 than 23 years, and commend Pamela Howard Oglesby-Fox as a 2026 Juneteenth Celebration39 Honoree.40 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body41 recognize and commend the Daughters of Mary Magdalene and Pamel a Howard42 Oglesby-Fox.43 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed44 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for dis tribution to the Daughters of45 Mary Magdalene and Pamela Howard Oglesby-Fox.46 S.
