26 LC 39 5112 House Resolution 1943 By: Representative Gaines of the 120th A RESOLUTION Recognizing the Honorable Nancy Denson and dedicating an interchange in her honor; and1 for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, the Honorable Nancy Denson has long been recognized by the citizens of this3 state for the vital role that she plays in leadership in this s tate and her deep personal4 commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Denson has been a resident of Athens, Georgia, since 1966, moving from6 Memphis, Tennessee, and earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia; and7 WHEREAS, she was elected as the first woman to serve on the Athens City Council in 1980,8 served as tax commissioner from 1985 to 2010, and served as the mayor from 2011 to 2017;9 and10 WHEREAS, Mrs. Denson was active with the Association of County Commissioners of11 Georgia and the Georgia Municipal Association; and12 WHEREAS, her leadership and guidance has been instrumental to n umerous civic13 organizations in Athens; and14 H. R. 1943 - 1 - 26 LC 39 5112 WHEREAS, Mrs. Denson has been recognized with numerous honors a nd accolades,15 including an Athena Award from the Athens Area Chamber of Comme rce, a Lifetime16 Volunteer Award from Athens Junior League, an Action Hero from Action Ministries, and17 Top Dawg from the University of Georgia Alumni Association; and18 WHEREAS, her love and support has uplifted the lives of her late husband, Bob; her children19 Bobby, Diane, Margaret, and Kathleen; and her grandchildren; and20 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this21 remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recogniz ed by dedicating an22 interchange in her honor.23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL24 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the western interchange of State Route 10 Loop and State25 Route 10/US-78 BUS in Athens-Clarke County is dedicated as the Mayor Nancy Denson26 Interchange.27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and28 directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Mayor Nancy Denson29 Interchange.30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized31 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the32 Honorable Nancy Denson and the Department of Transportation.33 H.
