26 LC 112 4060 House Resolution 1929 By: Representatives Schofield of the 63rd, Scott of the 76th, Davis of the 87th, Burnough of the 77th, and Adeyina of the 110th A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending New Edition for their outstanding contributions to music and1 entertainment and for their cultural and industry impact connected to the State of Georgia;2 and for other purposes.3 WHEREAS, New Edition is one of the most iconic and influential R&B groups in American4 music history, originating from Boston, Massachusetts, and rising to national prominence in5 the early 1980s; and6 WHEREAS, the group—composed of members Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Br own, Michael7 Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, and Johnny Gill—has achieved extraordinary success8 both collectively and through its members' individual careers; and9 WHEREAS, New Edition has captivated audiences around the world with timeless hits such10 as "Candy Girl," "Cool It Now," and "Can You Stand the Rain," helping to shape the sound11 and style of contemporary R&B and pop music; and12 WHEREAS, the group's legacy is deeply connected to the State of Georgia, particularly13 Atlanta, which serves as a global hub for music, film, and creative industries; and14 H. R. 1929 - 1 - 26 LC 112 4060 WHEREAS, members of New Edition have maintained strong ties to Georgia, with Ronnie15 DeVoe and Shamari DeVoe residing in the Atlanta metropolitan ar ea and actively16 contributing to the region's business, entertainment, and community development landscape;17 and18 WHEREAS, New Edition's story and cultural impact were further c emented through The19 New Edition Story, which was filmed in and around Atlanta, showcasing Georgia's thriving20 film industry and reinforcing the state's position as a premier destination for major television21 and film productions; and22 WHEREAS, their influence extends beyond music into entrepreneurship, mentorship, and23 the cultivation of future talent, aligning with Georgia's continued investment in the creative24 economy and workforce development within the entertainment sector; and25 WHEREAS, New Edition has demonstrated longevity, resilience, an d excellence over26 decades, maintaining cultural relevance while evolving with the times and continuing to27 perform for global audiences; and28 WHEREAS, their contributions have elevated the music industry w hile representing29 excellence in Black artistry, entrepreneurship, and cultural ex pression on a national and30 international stage, including within Georgia's vibrant creative community; and31 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordi nary achievements and32 enduring legacy of New Edition be appropriately honored.33 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that34 the members of this body recognize and commend New Edition for their groundbreaking35 H. R. 1929 - 2 - 26 LC 112 4060 contributions to music and entertainment and for their meaningful connection to the State of36 Georgia's dynamic music, film, and cultural industries.37 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized38 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to New39 Edition.40 H.
