26 LC 112 4053 Senate Resolution 1038 By: Senator Mallow of the 2nd A RESOLUTION Recognizing the 23rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration by the Daughters of Mary Magdalene1 and commending Anthony Mahammad; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and3 emphasizes cultural pride through events inspired by recollecti ons of our ancestors' and4 grandparents' struggles against slavery and segregation as well as their fight for freedom,5 dignity, justice, and equality for generations to come; and6 WHEREAS, the Daughters of Mary Magdalene is a nonprofit community organization that7 serves areas lacking economic, social, and cultural resources b y offering educational8 materials, mentoring, and oral history griots to motivate and help uplift people to reach their9 full potential; and10 WHEREAS, the theme for this year's Juneteenth celebration is "R ebuild, Reconstruct and11 Re-Educate!"; and12 WHEREAS, one of the highlights of the Juneteenth celebration is the Honorees Program,13 which recognizes ordinary people who exemplify extraordinary character and dedicate their14 S. R. 1038 - 1 - 26 LC 112 4053 life's work to helping and benefitting children, young adults, and others throughout the15 community; and16 WHEREAS, Anthony Mahammad is being recognized as a 2026 Junetee nth Celebration17 Honoree; and18 WHEREAS, Anthony Mahammad is a Savannah native, and he attended Windsor High19 School. He was raised in a very nurturing environment and was t utored by the legendary20 Lucius "Bo" Levett—a highly respected local coach and community leader who made a21 difference in the Cloverdale Community. Bo Levett organized the Police Athletic Program22 called PAL, which gave young people an outlet to showcase their talent and ability to play23 sports. This program gave Anthony the courage and the leadershi p he needed as a young24 person to go out and work in his community; and25 WHEREAS, Anthony helped in Savannah to organize one of the most famous marches in26 the United States—the Million Man March. It was one of the largest gatherings of Black men27 held in Washington, D.C. Upon returning home, Anthony went thro ugh the toughest28 communities using the information and tools he learned to teach and redirect young Black29 youth towards positive goals; and30 WHEREAS, Anthony is affectionately called a quiet hero. His true strength lies in quietness;31 he prefers to work in the background and he stays away from the frontlines. He has devoted32 years of community service to the youth and the homeless of Savannah. He says he gets joy33 by getting to know the people he serves with a hot meal and a kind word; and34 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper to recognize the D aughters of Mary35 Magdalene for presenting the Juneteenth program in Savannah for more than 23 years,36 S. R. 1038 - 2 - 26 LC 112 4053 making it the longest-serving Juneteenth celebration in Savannah, and commend Anthony37 Mahammad as a 2026 Juneteenth Celebration Honoree.38 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body39 recognize and commend the Daughters of Mary Magdalene and Anthony Mahammad.40 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed41 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for dis tribution to the Daughters of42 Mary Magdalene and Anthony Mahammad.43 S.
