26 LC 39 5124 House Resolution 1942 By: Representative Gaines of the 120th A RESOLUTION Honoring the life of Mr. Dan Magill and dedicating an intersection in his memory; and for1 other purposes.2 WHEREAS, the State of Georgia continues to mourn the loss of on e of the University of3 Georgia's legends with the passing of Mr. Dan Magill in August of 2014; and4 WHEREAS, Mr. Magill was born on January 25, 1921, and was a native of Athens, Georgia,5 where he began his lifelong affiliation with the University of Georgia athletic program as a6 bat boy for the baseball team and manager for the tennis team; and7 WHEREAS, as an attendee of the University of Georgia, Mr. Magil l was an invaluable8 member of the university's swim and tennis teams, volunteered as an assistant football coach,9 and was a member of the Chi Psi fraternity before graduating with a degree in journalism in10 1942; and11 WHEREAS, Mr. Magill served as a guardian of this nation's freed om and liberty with the12 United States Marine Corps during World War II and, upon his return home, worked briefly13 as the prep sports editor with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; and14 H. R. 1942 - 1 - 26 LC 39 5124 WHEREAS, in 1949, this lifelong Bulldog returned home to his alma mater to serve as the15 university's sports information director, and later he establis hed The Georgia Bulldog16 newspaper and founded the Bulldog Club; and17 WHEREAS, Mr. Magill assumed the role as the head coach of the u niversity's tennis18 program in 1954, a position he proudly held for 34 years; and19 WHEREAS, as head of the tennis program, Mr. Magill oversaw the construction of the20 university's tennis complex and put Athens on the map as a tennis destination, with the city21 serving as host to the NCAA tennis tournament 21 times and as home to the hall of fame for22 the Intercollegiate Tennis Association; and23 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkab le and distinguished24 Georgian be recognized appropriately by dedicating an intersection in his memory.25 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL26 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the intersection of State Route 15AL (S. Milledge Avenue)27 and Woodlawn Avenue in Athens-Clarke County is dedicated as the Dan Magill Memorial28 Intersection.29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and30 directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Dan Magill Memorial31 Intersection.32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized33 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the34 family of Mr. Dan Magill and to the Department of Transportation.35 H.
