26 LC 129 1490 Senate Resolution 1041 By: Senator Mallow of the 2nd A RESOLUTION Recognizing the 23rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration by the Daughters of Mary Magdalene1 and commending Dr. Brenda L. Roberts; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and3 emphasizes cultural pride through events inspired by recollecti ons of our ancestors' and4 grandparents' struggles against slavery and segregation, and their fight for freedom, dignity,5 justice, and equality for generations to come; and 6 WHEREAS, the Daughters of Mary Magdalene is a nonprofit community organization that7 serves areas lacking economic, social, and cultural resources b y offering educational8 materials, mentoring, and oral history griots to motivate and help uplift people to reach their9 full potential; and 10 WHEREAS, the theme for this year's Juneteenth celebration is, "Rebuild, Reconstruct and11 Re-Educate!"; and 12 WHEREAS, one of the highlights of the Juneteenth celebration is the Honorees Program,13 which recognizes ordinary people who exemplify extraordinary character and dedicate their14 S. R. 1041 - 1 - 26 LC 129 1490 life's work to helping and benefitting children, young adults, and others throughout the15 community; and 16 WHEREAS, Dr. Brenda L. Roberts is being recognized as a 2026 Ju neteenth Celebration17 Honoree; and18 WHEREAS, a native of Savannah, Brenda is a 1971 graduate of Tom pkins High School. 19 She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Savan nah State University, a20 Master of Education degree in School Counseling from Georgia So uthern University, an21 Education Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision f rom Lincoln Memorial22 University, and a Doctorate in Christian Counseling from Jackso nville Theological23 Seminary; and24 WHEREAS, Dr. Brenda L. Roberts proudly served her country as a Staff Sergeant in the25 United States Air Force Reserve; and 26 WHEREAS, Brenda devoted 37 years to the youth of Savannah, reti ring as a School27 Counselor from the Savannah-Chatham Public School System after a distinguished career28 of service. She continues to work with students in the school district in a part-time capacity;29 and30 WHEREAS, Brenda served for several years as the voice of "A Moment in Black History"31 on radio station WSOK 1230 AM, sharing powerful reflections of local African Americans32 that uplifted and educated the community; and33 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper to recognize the D aughters of Mary34 Magdalene for presenting the longest-serving Juneteenth celebration in Savannah, of more35 S. R. 1041 - 2 - 26 LC 129 1490 than 23 years, and commend Dr. Brenda L. Roberts as a 2026 June teenth Celebration36 Honoree.37 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body38 recognize and commend the Daughters of Mary Magdalene and Dr. Brenda L. Roberts.39 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed40 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for dis tribution to the Daughters of41 Mary Magdalene and Dr. Brenda L.
