26 LC 39 5116 House Resolution 1887 By: Representatives Lewis-Ward of the 115th and Holly of the 116th A RESOLUTION Honoring the life of Councilman Alphonso Thomas and dedicating an intersection in his1 memory; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Councilman Alphonso Thomas has long been recognized by the citizens of this3 state for the vital role that he has played in leadership and his deep personal commitment to4 the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and5 WHEREAS, Councilman Thomas attended Smith Barnes Elementary Sch ool, the Henry6 County Training School in McDonough, and earned a football scho larship to Fort Valley7 State University; and8 WHEREAS, affectionately known as "Blue," Councilman Thomas serv ed the City of9 Stockbridge for more than 35 years; and10 WHEREAS, he was employed by the Economic Opportunity Authority as a youth organizer11 at Perry Holmes where he mentored youth, and his commitment to civic engagement also12 extended through his membership in the Esquire Fraternity and Fort Valley State alumni; and13 H. R. 1887 - 1 - 26 LC 39 5116 WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Councilman Thomas was a member of Trinity14 United Methodist Church; and15 WHEREAS, Councilman Thomas was recognized with numerous honors, including the16 Henry County NAACP Freedom Fund Community Service award, the Eagle Scout Mentor's17 Pin from Troop #65, and the Zeta Mu Nu Chapter Omega Citizen of the year award; and18 WHEREAS, he was known for his principled leadership, collaborat ive spirit, and19 commitment to public service, earning respect from colleagues and citizens alike; and20 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkab le and distinguished21 Georgian be appropriately recognized by dedicating an intersection in his memory.22 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL23 ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the intersection of State Route 42/US-23 and East Atlanta24 Road in Henry County is dedicated as the Councilman Alphonso Th omas Memorial25 Intersection.26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and27 directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Councilman Alphonso28 Thomas Memorial Intersection.29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized30 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the31 family of Councilman Alphonso Thomas and to the Department of Transportation.32 H.
