26 LC 112 4154 Senate Resolution 1075 By: Senator Halpern of the 39th A RESOLUTION Recognizing March 2026 as Music in Our Schools Month; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, for more than 40 years, the month of March has been nationally recognized as2 Music in Our Schools Month, a time to celebrate the role of music education in the academic3 and personal development of students; and4 WHEREAS, music education provides students with opportunities t o develop creativity,5 discipline, teamwork, and critical thinking while engaging in m eaningful individual and6 group activities; and7 WHEREAS, research shows that students who participate in music education demonstrate8 improvements in verbal memory, language development, reading ab ility, and executive9 functioning, and learning to play an instrument at a young age can contribute to improved10 academic performance later in life; and11 WHEREAS, schools that offer music programs often experience graduation rates more than12 20 percent higher than schools without such programs, and students participating in music13 instruction can experience academic improvements of more than 40 percent; and14 S. R. 1075 - 1 - 26 LC 112 4154 WHEREAS, Georgia is home to more than 4,000 music educators and over 45 institutions15 with postsecondary programs dedicated to preparing future music teachers, demonstrating16 a strong commitment to music education and the arts; and17 WHEREAS, the Georgia Music Educators Association, founded in 1938, has long supported18 music education by providing professional development opportuni ties for teachers and19 performance opportunities for students, including statewide eva luations and programs in20 band, choral, and orchestral music, in which thousands of students participate each year; and21 WHEREAS, national organizations such as the Recording Academy a nd the GRAMMY22 Museum provide valuable music education initiatives, including mentorship programs,23 educator training, and career development opportunities that connect students and teachers24 with professionals across the music industry, helping to strengthen classroom instruction and25 expand pathways to careers in music and the creative arts; and26 WHEREAS, programs such as GRAMMY U and GRAMMY in the Schools of fer27 workshops, networking opportunities, career panels, and hands-o n experiences that allow28 students to learn directly from recording artists, producers, a nd industry professionals,29 helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world music careers; and30 WHEREAS, these initiatives also support music educators by prov iding professional31 development resources, educational programming, and recognition programs such as the32 Music Educator Award, which celebrates teachers who have made lasting contributions to33 music education and student achievement; and34 S. R. 1075 - 2 - 26 LC 112 4154 WHEREAS, the study of music is an essential component of a well -rounded education,35 helping students develop creativity, problem-solving abilities, cultural understanding, and36 skills in both the production and performance of music; and37 WHEREAS, recognizing Music in Our Schools Month highlights the importance of38 supporting music educators and ensuring students continue to have access to music programs39 that enrich their academic experience and personal development.40 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body41 recognize March 2026 as Music in Our Schools Month in honor of the music educators,42 students, and organizations that promote the value of music education.43 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed44 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the45 press.46 S.
