26 LC 112 4188 House Resolution 2038 By: Representatives Santos of the 117th, Kahaian of the 81st, Douglas of the 78th, and Holly of the 116th A RESOLUTION Recognizing March 12, 2026, as Locust Grove Day at the state ca pitol; and for other1 purposes.2 WHEREAS, established on December 20, 1893, the City of Locust G rove, Georgia,3 developed as a center of commerce along a busy rail line, suppo rting an agricultural4 community through farm-to-market transportation and essential services such as a cotton gin,5 hardware store, grocery stores, and a community bank; and6 WHEREAS, in the early years of its growth, the city expanded with the establishment of the7 Locust Grove Institute, a private college founded by and adjacent to Providence Indian Creek8 Baptist Church, which contributed to the development of housing and infrastructure to9 support students, educators, and staff; and10 WHEREAS, by the early 1970s, the city entered a new period of expansion as a developing11 exurb of Atlanta, with growth fueled by its proximity to Inters tate 75, the addition of the12 Skyland Lake Subdivision, and the creation of new hospitality and service businesses; and13 WHEREAS, since 2000, Locust Grove has experienced substantial growth in both population14 and land area, expanding to more tha n 15 square miles with over 11,749 residents and15 H. R. 2038 - 1 - 26 LC 112 4188 establishing itself as a growing center for logistics and manufacturing within the metropolitan16 region; and17 WHEREAS, the city's growing economic strength is demonstrated by a tax digest exceeding18 $1 billion along with ongoing efforts to revitalize the historic downtown through expanded19 dining, entertainment, and residential opportunities; and20 WHEREAS, the City of Locust Grove is led by Mayor Carlos Greer, elected in November21 2018 as the city's first Black mayor, alongside a dedicated council and nearly 100 employees22 who provide essential services in public safety, community deve lopment, utilities,23 administration, and downtown development; and24 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the City of L ocust Grove be25 appropriately honored for its rich history, sustained growth, and ongoing contributions to the26 vitality of the State of Georgia.27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that28 the members of this body recognize March 12, 2026, as Locust Gr ove Day at the state29 capitol.30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized31 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the32 public and the press.33 H.
