HR2093: HR2093 Hutchings, Jacob "Jake"; commend

26 LC 129 1541 House Resolution 2093 By: Representatives Gilliard of the 162nd, Bell of the 75th, Jackson of the 68th, and Tran of the 80th A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending Jacob "Jake" Hutchings; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, the "Original 33" were the first 33 African-American members of the Georgia2 General Assembly, elected into office in 1868; and3 WHEREAS, born a slave in 1831 in Virginia, Jacob "Jake" Hutchings was elected as the first4 Black State Representative for Jones County in 1868; and5 WHEREAS, although not formally remembered as a member of the "O riginal 33" Jacob6 "Jake" Hutchings was the 34th African-American member of the Georgia General Assembly;7 and8 WHEREAS, prior to his election, Jake was a skilled stone mason, cutting much of the stone9 in the county, including the granite in this retaining wall at the Jones County Court House;10 and 11 WHEREAS, he was highly regarded as man of great strength, kindness, and respect; and12 H. R. 2093 - 1 - 26 LC 129 1541 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper to honor the outst anding impact of this13 distinguished Georgian.14 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that15 the members of this body recognize and commend Jacob "Jake" Hutchings.16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized17 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the18 public and the press.19 H.
