# About the opinions on Georgia Commons

Opinions of the Supreme Court of Georgia filed from 2020-01-13 through 2026-09-09: 1,744 opinions.

- Opinions come from CourtListener and, for decisions it has not yet published, from the Supreme Court of Georgia's own website (68 opinions at present). When CourtListener publishes one of those decisions, its record replaces the court-sourced one and the old address redirects to it.
- The court's website index was last compared on 2026-09-16: every decision it listed through 2026-09-09 is here.
- Records whose text is shorter than 200 characters are not included.
- Each decision is counted once: where two records hold one decision (CourtListener's slip opinion and its Georgia Reports copy, or a court-website record and CourtListener's), the better copy is kept and the other record's id redirects to it (80 so far).

## Source

Opinions come from two sources. CourtListener (Free Law Project), court id `ga`, publishes the Supreme Court of Georgia's slip opinions and, later, their Georgia Reports copies. For a decision CourtListener has not yet published, the opinion is read from the PDF the court posts on its own website (gasupreme.us), listed on the court's yearly index. Each opinion links the document it was read from in `source_url`, and `record_source` says which source wrote the record (`courtlistener` or `gasupreme`). The words are the source document's, unchanged. CourtListener's copy and a court-website PDF are both read with their layout, and their lines are joined into paragraphs with the page numbers dropped. The docket number, decision date, and citation are CourtListener's unless the opinion's own caption disagrees, in which case the caption wins (`date_filed_source` says which); a court-website record takes all three from its caption. When CourtListener later publishes a decision first read from the court's website, its record replaces the court-website one and the old id redirects to it. A substituted opinion the court posts in place of an earlier one replaces the stored text of that decision, and `court_note` carries the court's note. Coverage begins with opinions filed in 2020; the Court of Appeals is not included.

## Summaries

Each opinion carries summaries (headline, plain-language summary, holding, disposition, why it matters, and, behind `?full=1`, summarized reasoning and checked quotes) written by claude-sonnet-5 from the opinion text. They sit under a heading that names them as summaries by Georgia Commons, after the text, never mixed with it. Any quote in them was checked to appear verbatim in the opinion; those that did not were dropped. They are not the opinion and not legal advice.

## Addresses

An opinion's address is its docket number upper-cased (`/opinions/S23A0421`). When two or more opinions share a docket (a later order in the same case, or two records of one opinion), the docket address serves the most recent and lists the others; every opinion also answers at `/opinions/{docket}/{id}` with its record id (a CourtListener cluster id, or `ga-` and the docket for a record read from the court's website), an address that keeps answering after the record is replaced.
