HB469: HB469 True Campus Safety Act; enact

Georgia law currently includes provisions letting some school personnel carry weapons within school safety zones, at school functions, or on buses and other transportation provided by a school. House Bill 469, called the True Campus Safety Act, would undo those provisions. The bill repeals paragraph (6) of subsection (c) of O.C.G.A. § 16-11-127.1, which is the exception allowing weapons carrying within school safety zones, at school functions, or on school transportation. It also repeals O.C.G.A. § 16-11-130.1 entirely, which is the separate law specifically allowing certain school personnel to carry weapons in those same settings. The bill does not create any new rules; it simply removes these existing authorizations from Georgia law. It does not state a specific future effective date beyond the standard repeal of conflicting laws.

• Repeals an exception in Georgia's weapons law (O.C.G.A. § 16-11-127.1) that currently allows certain people to carry weapons within school safety zones, at school functions, or on school transportation.

School personnel who are currently authorized to carry weapons within school safety zones or at school functions under existing law, along with the school districts and campuses where those personnel work, since the authorization to carry would be removed.

If enacted, school employees who currently rely on these provisions to carry a firearm on campus, at school events, or on school transportation would lose that legal authorization, changing who can lawfully have a weapon in and around Georgia schools.
