A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending the 90th annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival is one of the oldest and most beloved traditions in the City of Atlanta, held annually in Piedmont Park and serving as a signature celebration of springtime in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival was first established in 1936 under the leadership of Walter Rich, founder of Rich's Department Store, as an effort to promote the City of Atlanta and highlight the natural beauty of its blooming dogwood trees; and

WHEREAS, the festival was created during the era of the Great Depression with the purpose of lifting community spirits, encouraging civic pride, and drawing national and international attention to Atlanta as a vibrant and growing city; and

WHEREAS, early organizers, including local garden clubs and civic leaders, undertook a citywide beautification effort by planting dogwood trees throughout Atlanta, reinforcing the festival's mission to celebrate nature and enhance the city's landscape; and

WHEREAS, over the past nine decades, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival has evolved into a premier fine arts festival, featuring a nationally recognized juried artist market, live music, cultural performances, and family-friendly activities that attract hundreds of thousands of attendees each year; and

WHEREAS, the festival remains a cornerstone of Atlanta's cultural identity, fostering appreciation for the arts, supporting local and national artists, and strengthening community bonds while celebrating the natural beauty of Georgia's native dogwood trees; and

WHEREAS, the 90th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival represents a remarkable milestone, reflecting the enduring resilience, community support, and cultural significance of an event that has continued for generations and remains one of the premier arts festivals in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the continued success of the Atlanta Dogwood Festival is a testament to the dedication of its organizers, volunteers, sponsors, artists, and supporters who have preserved and advanced this treasured tradition for nearly a century.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and commend the 90th annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival for its historic legacy, cultural contributions, and enduring impact on the State of Georgia. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the organizers of the Atlanta Dogwood Festival.
