A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending the Howard University Alumni Club of Atlanta; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Howard University Alumni Club of Atlanta is a group of exceptional Howard University Alumni from all walks of life, who reside in the Greater Atlanta Metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, the Howard University Alumni Club was established over 60 years ago and since then has gone above and beyond to carry out their beloved alma mater's motto of "truth and service"; and

WHEREAS, the Howard University Alumni Club has worked tirelessly to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to award scholarships to well-deserving students in the metropolitan area so that they may have the opportunity to attend Howard University; and

WHEREAS, for more than 30 years, the Howard University Alumni Club has conducted a one of a kind, four day bus trips to Howard University exposing hundreds of Georgia high school students to the magic of the "Mecca"; many of these students have gone on to enroll in Howard University and returned to Georgia to become servant leaders; and

WHEREAS, the Howard University Alumni Club has enriched the lives of hundreds of high school students through one of the finest mentoring programs in the nation; and

WHEREAS, the Howard University Alumni Club of Atlanta plays a significant role in recruiting students for Howard University by participating in college fairs throughout the metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, distinguished alumnus of Howard University include several Georgians and civil rights leaders, such as Ambassador Andrew Young and Hank Thomas, one of the original Freedom Riders and founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; and

WHEREAS, Atlanta Mayors Andrew Young, Shirley Franklin, and Kasim Reed are Howard University alumni; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper to honor the outstanding accomplishments of this extraordinary organization.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend the contributions of the Howard University Alumni Club of Atlanta. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the Howard University Alumni Club of Atlanta.
