A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and memory of Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom on January 15, 2026; and

WHEREAS, Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom was born on December 4, 1950, in Washington, Georgia, a beloved daughter of Albertha and Clemon Johnson; and

WHEREAS, Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom, affectionately known as “Von,” devoted a remarkable 50 years to the field of education, serving as a Business Education teacher and instructional leader at Social Circle High School, Briarwood High School, Russell High School, Tri-Cities High School, and Creekside High School, from which she retired in 2008; and

WHEREAS, demonstrating her commitment to real-world learning, Von established a functioning bank within the school, teaching students the fundamentals of money management, saving, and interest, and providing access to opening real bank accounts; and

WHEREAS, her impact extends far beyond the classroom as she faithfully sponsored numerous school clubs; coached cheerleading, basketball, and volleyball; and mentored fellow educators; and

WHEREAS, following her retirement in 2008, Von continued to educate, lead, mentor, and support students at various schools throughout the greater-Atlanta area as a parent liaison, substitute teacher, and on the Tri-Cities High School Alumni Association Advisory Council; and

WHEREAS, a woman of service and sisterhood, Von was a member Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and remained a devoted to the Nu Lambda Omega Chapter throughout her life, exemplifying the sorority's principles of scholarship, sisterhood, and service, and was honored as “Soror of the Year” for her leadership and dedication; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous woman, Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom will long be remembered for her love of family, friendship, and community and will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom and express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the family of Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom.
