A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and memory of Dr. Ego Okafor; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Ego Okafor was a distinguished science educator in the DeKalb County School District who dedicated more than 25 years of exemplary service to the students and families of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, throughout her remarkable career, Dr. Okafor was widely respected for her unwavering commitment to academic excellence, educational equity, and community empowerment, fostering engaging, inquiry-based classrooms where students felt valued, challenged, and inspired to reach their fullest potential; and

WHEREAS, she was a steadfast advocate for underserved students, working tirelessly to ensure equitable access to educational resources and opportunities as well as leaving an enduring mark on the countless young minds she taught and mentored; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Okafor's academic achievements reflected her deep commitment to education, earning an education specialist degree in science education from Georgia State University in 2005, a Master of Education in science education from Georgia State University in 1999, and a Bachelor of Science with honors in zoology from the University of Nigeria in 1978; and

WHEREAS, her excellence in teaching was recognized with numerous honors, including Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2002 and 2004, Georgia Earth Science Teacher of the Year in 2004, Henderson Middle School Teacher of the Year on multiple occasions, and the prestigious People to People Eisenhower Distinguished Educator Award; and

WHEREAS, beyond the classroom, Dr. Okafor was a tireless servant of her community whose civic engagement reflected her deep belief in democracy and collective responsibility, dedicating countless hours to educating residents about the importance of civic participation and ensuring that every voice had the opportunity to be heard; and

WHEREAS, she demonstrated extraordinary compassion and leadership by assisting elderly citizens with voter registration, patiently guiding them through the process, and on election days personally organizing transportation and driving more than 100 seniors to polling places, removing barriers and empowering them to exercise their fundamental right to vote; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Okafor's legacy extended beyond her professional and civic accomplishments, as she was a devoted wife of 41 years, a loving mother of two, and a source of strength, wisdom, and inspiration to her family, instilling in them enduring values of integrity, perseverance, service, and faith; and

WHEREAS, though she passed away a few months ago, her profound influence continues to live on through the students she inspired, the colleagues she mentored, the community she uplifted, and the family she cherished; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this body honor the life and legacy of this extraordinary educator, public servant, and community leader whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the State of Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Dr. Ego Okafor and express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the family of Dr. Ego Okafor.
