A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the Punjabi language; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, native to the Punjab region of India and Pakistan, Punjabi is the ninth most widely spoken language in the world, with approximately 600 million speakers; and
WHEREAS, Punjabi has a significant number of speakers in India, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia, as well as smaller communities of speakers in other countries; and
WHEREAS, there are more than 780,000 Punjabi-speaking Americans and more than 15,000 Punjabi-speaking Georgians; and
WHEREAS, the Sikh American Society of Georgia and the Georgia Punjabi-speaking community are committed to preserving, protecting, and sharing Punjabi language, literature, art, culture, and traditions with fellow Georgians.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the Punjabi language in honor of the contributions made by Punjabi speakers to our communities.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the press.
