A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and honoring the victims of communism; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, over 100 years have passed since the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and the formation of the first communist government under Vladimir Lenin, leading to decades of oppression and violence under communist regimes throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, based on the economic philosophies of Karl Marx, communism has proven incompatible with the ideals of liberty, prosperity, and dignity of human life and has given rise to such infamous totalitarian dictators as Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Mao Zedong, János Kádár, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez, Daniel Ortega, Ho Chi Minh, Wojciech Jaruzelski, and Pol Pot; and
WHEREAS, more than 100 million people have fallen victim to communist regimes worldwide, representing many different ethnicities, creeds, and backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, communist regimes have denied their own citizens of the rights to freedom of worship, freedom of speech, and freedom of association; and
WHEREAS, in addition to violating basic human rights, communist regimes have suppressed intellectual freedom, cultural life, and self-determination movements in numerous nations; and
WHEREAS, the State of Georgia is home to many of these freedom-loving victims and their descendants from around the world who came to this great state in pursuit of the American Dream; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the members of this body acknowledge and recognize the victims of communist regimes.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and honor the hundreds of millions of people who have fallen victim to communist regimes around the world.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the press.
