A RESOLUTION

Recognizing February 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases; and

WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging; it is a progressive brain disease that gets worse over time and is the seventh leading cause of death in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, more than 188,000 Georgians over age 65 are living with Alzheimer's disease and 374,000 family caregivers bear the burden of the disease and have accumulated approximately 755 million hours of unpaid care, valued at $11.4 billion; and

WHEREAS, an increasing number of individuals are developing younger-onset Alzheimer's disease, a form of the disease that occurs prior to age 65, which can be particularly difficult on family dynamics and economics due to the early occurrence of the disease; and

WHEREAS, because Alzheimer's disease and related dementias are accompanied by memory loss, changes in personality and behavior, and a tendency to wander, individuals with this disease are at an increased risk for accidental injury, getting lost or disoriented, and being abused, neglected, and exploited; and

WHEREAS, caregivers for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias experience a significant toll on their physical, mental, and financial health and often report high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and health problems; and

WHEREAS, there is an economic impact of Alzheimer's disease upon the business, medical, and caregiver communities of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this day be committed to increasing awareness of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias to address the needs of this growing segment of Georgia's population.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize February 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the state capitol. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the press.
