A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending the South River Watershed Alliance upon the grand occasion of its 25th anniversary; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, the South River Watershed Alliance is the only organization protecting the South River; and
WHEREAS, the South River is a headwater to Georgia's largest freshwater system, that feeds into the Atlantic Ocean on Georgia's coast; and
WHEREAS, the South River flows southeastwardly for 60 miles from metro Atlanta to Jackson Lake, where it becomes the Ocmulgee; and
WHEREAS, the South River watershed drains approximately 544 square miles of creeks and streams across sections of Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, Henry, Rockdale, Newton, and Butts Counties; and
WHEREAS, cleaner water requires increased awareness, collective advocacy, stronger protection, and management of rivers as a valuable natural resource; and
WHEREAS, as metro Atlanta booms with development, the South River continues to flow from the earth - undervalued and insufficiently protected; and
WHEREAS, the South River Watershed Alliance is committed to ecological restoration of the South River for the benefit of nature and people; and
WHEREAS, the South River Watershed Alliance's mission is to elevate water as a resource, boost awareness and advocacy, make recreation accessible; and restore the South River; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the 25th anniversary of this outstanding alliance is appropriately honored.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend the South River Watershed Alliance's indelible impact on the South River and the water systems of Georgia, congratulate it upon 25 years of advocacy, and extend sincere best wishes for its continued growth and development. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the South River Watershed Alliance.
