En lenguaje claro

This Senate resolution does not create new statewide policy; instead it names specific pieces of the state highway system after Georgians the General Assembly wants to honor. Each numbered part of the resolution contains a short biography of a person (or, in one case, a married couple) explaining why they are being recognized, followed by operative language in Part XXII that formally dedicates a road, bridge, intersection, or interchange in their name. The honorees include former state senators, a college athlete turned NFL player, a WNBA player and coach, a World War II veteran, small business owners, local elected officials, and a slain 911 dispatcher, spread across counties including Clayton, Fulton, Carroll, Baldwin, Appling, Banks, Chatham, Cherokee, Dougherty, Monroe, Jasper, and Camden. The resolution also directs the Department of Transportation to erect and maintain signs marking each dedication and instructs the Secretary of the Senate to send copies of the resolution to the honorees or their families.

Qué hace el proyecto de ley

  • Dedicates specific segments of numbered state routes, bridges, intersections, and one interchange in more than 20 Georgia counties to individual namesakes.
  • Directs the Georgia Department of Transportation to erect and maintain signs marking each of the newly named road facilities.
  • Directs the Secretary of the Senate to distribute copies of the resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the honorees or their surviving family members.
  • Names a stretch of State Route 206 in Coffee County as 'Veterans Perimeter Road' to honor military veterans generally, separate from the individually named dedications.

A quién afecta

The resolution directly affects the Georgia Department of Transportation, which must install and maintain the new commemorative signage, and the named honorees or their families, who receive the recognition. Drivers in the affected counties (including Clayton, Fulton, Carroll, Baldwin, Appling, Banks, Chatham, Cherokee, Dougherty, Monroe, Jasper, and Camden) will see new road names.

Por qué importa

For the families and communities involved, these dedications create lasting, publicly visible tributes to people who served in the Georgia Senate, coached generations of student athletes, ran small businesses, served in the military, or died in the line of duty. The changes affect signage and naming only, not traffic rules, funding, or road maintenance standards.

Disposiciones clave

  • Parts I through XXI each recite the biography of an honoree and state the type of road facility (highway, bridge, intersection, or interchange) to be dedicated to them.
  • Part XXII contains the operative dedications, naming, for example, State Route 139/Riverdale Road in Clayton County as the Honorable Valencia Seay Highway and the bridge on State Route 100 over Turkey Creek in Carroll County as the Masen 'Mase' McIntyre Memorial Bridge.
  • Part XXII also dedicates the entire portion of State Route 206 in Coffee County as Veterans Perimeter Road, honoring veterans as a group rather than a single named individual.
  • The resolution directs the Department of Transportation to erect and maintain appropriate signs for all facilities named in the resolution.
  • The resolution directs the Secretary of the Senate to distribute copies to the Department of Transportation and to the honorees or their families listed by name.
