Somerville v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld the felony murder conviction of a man tied to a gang-related shooting, rejecting his claims that the evidence was too thin and that the trial had legal errors.
Bentley v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia affirmed Kevin Bentley's malice murder conviction, ruling he never objected to the trial judge's comments at his self-representation hearing and that his trial lawyer's choice not to object was reasonable strategy.
Godfrey v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia dismissed a man's appeal from his re-sentencing after his 2000 guilty plea sentence was vacated, ruling he needed prior court permission to appeal because it counted as a direct appeal from a guilty plea.
Lenon v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld Angelo Lenon's murder convictions, ruling his trial lawyer was not ineffective for failing to challenge cell phone search warrants he argued were too broad.
Browne v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld a DeKalb County man's felony murder conviction, ruling that two flawed jury instructions and the trial court's refusal to instruct on voluntary manslaughter did not likely change the trial's outcome.
Clifton v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld the murder convictions of Morio Clifton and Christopher Woody in the 2015 shooting death of Warren Roseberry, rejecting challenges to the evidence, jury instructions, and their lawyers' performance.
Merilien v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld the dismissal of a Rockdale County man's attempt, nearly 19 years after his murder conviction, to file a late appeal, ruling the trial court had no legal authority to consider it.
Sanders v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld a DeKalb County man's murder conviction, rejecting his claims about jury instructions, a juror substitution, and his lawyer's performance at trial.
Lafargue v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld a Fulton County man's murder conviction, rejecting his claim that his lawyer's failure to request a self-defense-of-others jury instruction cost him a fair trial.
Allen v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia affirmed Daniel Lee Allen's murder conviction for the killing of Dwayne Louder, rejecting his challenges to evidence about his drug use, his arrest in New York, and a mid-trial change of lawyers.
Dryden v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld a Hall County man's murder conviction, ruling that admitting a 911 call at trial did not violate his right to confront witnesses because the call was not used to prove the truth of what the caller said.
Edwards v. State
The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld a Rockdale County man's felony murder and related convictions, ruling that an accomplice's testimony was sufficiently backed up by other evidence and that his ineffective-counsel claim was never properly raised below.
In the Matter of Shanina Nashae Lank
The Supreme Court of Georgia reinstated attorney Shanina Nashae Lank to practice law after she showed she had met the conditions the court had set for her return to the bar.
In the Matter of William Jason Rowland
The Supreme Court of Georgia accepted an attorney's request to voluntarily give up his law license after he pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault, a step the court treats the same as disbarment.
In the Matter of Mandi Deyerle Mcdonough
The Supreme Court of Georgia disbarred attorney Mandi Deyerle McDonough after she abandoned five family-law clients, failed to refund fees, and defaulted on the State Bar's disciplinary charges against her.
In the Matter of Ramon David Sammons, Jr.
The Supreme Court of Georgia suspended attorney Ramon David Sammons, Jr. for 24 months after he abandoned an elderly dementia patient's personal injury case, letting the statute of limitations expire without ever telling the client's daughter.
In the Matter of Kerry Eston Hand
The Supreme Court of Georgia disbarred attorney Kerry Easton Hand after finding he abandoned three clients' cases, lied to a court, and never responded to State Bar investigators or disciplinary proceedings.
In Re: Formal Advisory Opinion 24-1
The Supreme Court of Georgia approved a State Bar advisory opinion holding that lawyers, including those hired by insurers, may use third-party vendors to request documents from non-parties as long as the lawyer keeps real supervisory control.
Muhammad et al. v. Clayton County et al.
The Supreme Court of Georgia ruled that a pro se notice of appeal filed by a still-represented couple is not automatically void, even in a civil case, overturning a Court of Appeals decision that had dismissed their appeal.
Mclamb v. Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Savannah
The Supreme Court of Georgia reaffirmed the two-part test for when property owners are immune from lawsuits under the Recreational Property Act, but sent a Savannah tourist's sidewalk trip-and-fall case back because the lower court wrongly focused on what she personally was doing when she fell.
